Each exercise will be done 3 - 5 times. Then, take a break. This is so that the dog doesn't get bored so fast. Plus reward for every correct command that the dog does.
1.Off leash Training
This is where you will walk with you dog with out the leash. They will heel by your side while walking in certain areas
2. Add Distance
In this exercise it will teach your dog to come to you if they are at a certain distance from you and you want them to be back at your side.
3. Hand Signals for Training
You will slowly go from verbal to hand signals. Eventually the dog will know what you want them to do with just hand signals. Like sign language for humans
4. Touch or Target
In this exercise you want the dog to touch your hand with their nose, meaning your hand be the target. You can use this method with several different other things that you want them to touch or target.
5. Find
For this exercise you will hide a treat under a cup, you will have more then one cup, but they will have to find the treat under the correct cup. This is a fun game which would lead up to Nose work
6. Go to bed/rug
For this exercise we will use a rug or a towel which will be placed on the ground of course. This is for when someone comes to the door and you don't want the dog to be in the way.
7. Give paw
In this exercise the dog will be either sitting or standing in front of you. You will as the dog to give paw, while you are doing this show them the treat. This is fun to do when you are meeting people that are dog friendly; you can ask the person to tell the dog to give paw (same as shaking hands)
8. Hi-5
This exercise is fun to do as well as the give paw. Just have your hand in the hi-5 position and have a treat for them to receive once they give a hi-5 with their paw. You can even do this with a dog friendly person as well, to change up the greet in the group.
9. Left/Right
This exercise teaches the dog which direction they should go when given the command. When moving left or right it protects the dog while in crowded places such as busy streets and markets.
10. Roll over
In this exercise you will learn how to teach your dog to roll over on to their back by using the roll over command. Then they can get all the belly rubs that you can give, once you have rewarded them so that when you give the command then the belly rubs will be the reward instead of the treat.
It’s important to start teaching your dog commands as soon as possible. Not only will this make your life easier, but it will also help keep them safe. Dogs that know basic commands are less likely to run into traffic or get lost. As your dog masters the basics, you can move on to more advanced commands. Once you have a well-trained dog, you’ll be able to enjoy all the benefits that come with owning a pet.
